CHRISTMAS DAY.
OBSERVANCE IN TIMARU. As is usual, Timaru observed a quiet Christmas Day yesterday. For the most part, residents stayed at home, enjoying the peace and quietness usually associated with the occasion. For some, the day was one of pleasure only; others, and the largest number, remembered the day’s religious significance, and they attended the various churches, where special services had been arranged. Residents were pleasantly reminded of the fact that Christmas Day was again with them, as the Salvation Army, Military Cadet Band, and the Municipal Band, played yuletide music in various parts of the town. Yesterday morning broke fine, and for those who took advantage of the country, the parks and Caroline Bay, conditions were ideal. The sun was buried behind the clouds in the afternoon, but the temperature was high, until about 4.30, when there was a change, and within an hour steady rain had set in. Already there are large numbers of visitors in Timaru, and these people consequently swelled the numbers seen on Caroline Bay, and in the streets. The Bay presented an animated appearance throughout the morning and afternoon, and the facilities available were much appreciated by the visitors. The Park, which is looking exceptionally fine, was also a source of great attraction. Several tennis and similar clubs Opened their courts to members yesterday, while the Christmas Bowling /•Tournament had again a very successful commencement.
