NEWS AND NOTES.

A correspondent to the “Hawera Star” says:—lt may be of interest to readers to know that within a quarter of a mile of the Hawera Opera House on the day of the farmers’ rally there were 284 cars; 267 of them were products of U.S.A. and Canada, or rather made in U.S.A. and assembled in Canada, four were Italian, and 12 British.

‘'Things are bad enough, but there is too much pessimistic talk,” said a Northern farmer in Auckland. “ The North will be sound at one shilling for butter-fat, and with the premium on exchange I see no reason why the season should return much short of that price. The sheep men are worse off than the dairy farmers, but I know some who held their clip last year, held it again this season, and declare they will hold it next year if the price does not improve.”

Constructing a railway in England costs about £60,000 a mile, while a tramway costs £35,000.

Three years ago a husband and wife, whilst on a gipysing holiday in the wilds of Otago, found a manuka of rare beauty and exuberance —a double pure white. It was in the bush of the Catlins district. They brought a branch to Dunedin, and handed it to Mr J. B. McDougall, of St. Clair; and to his great joy he managed to propagate three cuttings from which a race has been produced. Subsequent efforts to re-discover the parent bush have failed. At the instance of Mr H. Hart this manuka is to have the registered name of Sir George Fenwick, Mr McDougall consenting. This season the plants from the parent cuttings were visited and admired by many gardening enthusiasts.

While British railways are carryingmore passengers, they are receiving less money, owing to their policy of charging lower fares.

At a meeting of Wairarapa farmers the Hon. A. D. McLeod, after dealing with interest rates, borrowing, and other subjects, declared emphatically that the thing most needed to pull the country out of the mud was a reduction in costs, and that Parliament should be called together to deal with the situation immediately the Prime Minister returned. Regarding what had been said about cutting down the salaries of the higher-paid men, Mr McLeod observed that he had a very great respect for the men who filled the positions in question, and was satisfied that many of them would command larger salaries in commercial life and elsewhere than they got as servants of the State. Cutting even 50 per cent, off the bigger salaries would represent a comparatively small saving, but a 10 per cent, cut on the salaries and wages of Public servants who got £3OO a year or less would represent about a million.

Owing to the fall in the cost-of-liv-ing figure, only about 25 per cent, of the men employed on British railways are now receiving any bonus added to their basic weekly wage.

The specialists say that they have been toiling throughout the year on customers’ faces to eradicate the effects of the tan, which adds years to women’s looks in cold weather. Women are advised to use the tan very lightly if they must use it at all, so that the effects may quickly disappear.
