RELIEF OF WORKERS. COMMUNITY CO-OPERATION INVITED. By Telegraph-Press Association WELLINGTON, December 24. In a statement issued by the Unemployment Board it was mentioned that “applications for sustenance paymnets will be received by the board on and after February 1 next and ‘.f no work is available sustenance payments will be made to those qualified to receive them.” This does not mean that application are to be made direct to the board in Wellington. Such a cour t will only delay and defeat the object of the apchcant in securing early relief. Before sustenance payments are made, or can even be considered, each case will require investigation. The rules which will govern the payment of sustenance will have to be de- ; ermined by the board and these are now being finalised. Forms of applicaion for sustenance are also being prepared. Full publicity will be given as early as possible of the procedure which must be followed by those desiring to obtain sustenance. At present it must be noted that applications for sustenance must be on the form’s provided and until these forms are available locally it is useless making applications in writing, either to the local office or to the board in Wellington. To do so merely causes congestion and delay in the preparation, printing and issue of the forms, etc., which are the first essential. The forms will be made available at every Labour Department bureau and local Post Office in time from applications to be made on February 1, after which the necessary investigation wih be made and all applications in order to be dealt with locally with the utmost expedition. It should be noted by those concerned al.so that no sustenance payments can be made to persons who have not paid their levy, nor to persons who are unable to work >g to illness or physical disability. The Board are doing their utmost to expedite the essential machinery without which sustenance payments cannot be made, and workers will assist and co-operate by refraining from writing, either to the local office or to Wellington until the forms are available.
