TEMUKA R.S.A. A meeting of the general committee of the Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Monday. There were present—Messrs W. F. Evans (president), Jas. King. W. Spillane, P. Thomas, G. A. Paterson, H. Wilson. T. H. Langford, H. Boulter, J. Maze, W. Oldfield, D. White (treasurer) and J. M. King (secretary). Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — Letters and telegrams from R.S.A. Headquarters, Wellington, re proposed explanatory address by Mr W. E. Leadley, a Dominion vice-president, on the Rehabilitation Commission report and recommendations. The president reported that 25th August had been fixed for a meeting at Temuka. From the secretary, Christchurch R. advising that Temuka’s application for a grant of £SO towards the unemployment fund had been considered, and in view of heavy calls on the fund this year a grant of £4O had been voted to Temuka. A vote of thanks was passed for this contribution. From the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society, Timaru, in reply to a request for a grant of £25 from the National War Funds Council, stating that as the Temuka branch of S. had funds available for the relief of unemployed returned soldiers, the request could not be compiled with. From headquarters, Wellington, suggesting that the Member of Parliament for Temuka. be requested to support the rehabilitation Commission’s report and recommendations on its passage through Parliament. It was agreed that this request be complied with. Other circulars dealing with general matters were received. The secretary read a report on a conference between, delegates from the Association and representatives of the Temuka Borough Council regarding i unemployed returned soldiers. The Association had made an offer of £SO, subject to a Borough Council subsidy of £SO, and then these two amounts to be subsidised by £IOO from the Public Works Department, £l5O of this £2OO to be spent in wages to unemployed returned soldiers. The representatives of the Council decided that they could only accept £25 on these conditions meantime, but would endeavour to arrange further suitable work to absorb the remainder in the near future. The R.S.A. delegates agreed to accept the position, and to postpone their next monthly meeting for a fortnight to give the Council an opportunity of arriving at a definite decision. The president reported that four married returned men had just finished a fortnight’s work, and a second batch of five married men were beingemployed by the Council, but that there were still a good number of unemployed returned men seeking work, and it was hoped to absorb these at an early date. It was agreed that the local branch of the South Canterbury Patriotic War Relief Society be approached with a view to having the vacancies on the committee of that Society filled by representatives of this Association. Mr W. Seward, Milford, was elected a new member of the Association.
