MOTOR UNION.
NORTH ISLAND SECTION. By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI. August 22. The annual conference of the North Island Motor Union opened here today. Mr W. O'Callaghan presided over 30 delegates. A welcome was extended by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr G. Darbyshire. This morning consideration was given to numerous remits. Criticism was levelled at the Government’s action in connection with the measures contained in the Finance Bill regarding the Main Highways Board funds, by Mr A. E. Ansell. Speaking as a motorist, he said the free grants to the Board now had to meet interest and sinking fund. Such action in the business code of ethics would be dishonourable, but the Government had allowed necessity to over-rule equity. The speaker urged the Union to get together with the counties and the farmers and fight the measure before it comes before the House next year to be reconsidered. He described the latest developments as the most serious crisis that had ever confronted the motorists of the Dominion. The Conference later empowered the executive to take action Mr W. A. O'Callaghan (Hawera) was elected president; and Dr. Porrit (Wanganui) and Mr A. J. Togood (Wellingt on > vice - presidents.
