CHINESE UNREST CONTINUES.
Northern Troops Retire G'HIANG-KAI-SHEK REINFORCED. United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 18, 7.0 p.m.) SHANGHAI, August 18. With the Shansi forces evacuating Shantung after the fall of Tinan, Nanking claims that the Northerners are leaving Lanfeng, which they have field during the whole campaign, intending to retire along the Lunghai front. If this is true, it is expected that the Northerners will yield Haifeng and Changchow, making a stand in the vicinity of Loyang. General Chiang-Kai-Shek, strongly reinforced by Southern troops, the removal of which led to the late Communist risings in Kinagsi and Hunan, and with twelve tanks purchased in Britain, he is undoubtedly in a superior position to Kuo-Min-Chun, which is badly depleted of effectives and material It is generally believed, however, that Nanking is too optimistic as there is much to do before the Northerners accept Nanking’s terms.
