SHIPPING RECORD.
POSITION AT PORT TO-DAY. With a heavy sea running outside Timaru again yesterday, there was a range in the harbour, and the R.M.S. Rotorua, which arrived on Tuesday afternoon, was forced to remain in the roadstead. The effect of the range was noticeable at No. 3 wharf, where the Argyllshire was lying, this ship being uneasy under her moorings. With the heavy rain on Tuesday waterside operations were at a standstill. The harbourmaster (Captain D. McDougalb hopes to bring the Rotorua alongside the wharf this morning, and it will be a record for the port to have two ships of the length and size of the Rotorua and Argyllshire at Timaru together. When the Hertford and Huntingdon were in port together some months ago. a record was established, the former ship being 520.7 ft in length, with a tonnage of 10,923 tons, and the Huntingdon! 10.951 tons, with a similar length. The Rotorua is 12,112 tons, and her length 526.4 ft while the Argyllshire is 11,949 tons, with a length of 526.2 ft. The lengths stated are between perpendiculars, and it is considered that another twenty to twenty-five feet can be added to find the actual footage. The Rotorua, formerly the Shropshire, is a sister ship to the Argyllshire, and also to the ill-fated Wiltshire. which was wrecked on the Great Barrier some years ago. Both vessels are passenger carriers, but the Rotorua is said to have more accommodation. hence the increased tonnage. The fresh record, which appears likely, will be made bv sister ships.
