HOSPITAL BOARD AND UNEMPLOYMENT.
To the Editor of the “ Timaru Herald.” ! Sir,—l have been waiting for some | abler pen than mine to carry on the [ Rev. H. W. Monaghan’s challenge, r “Wake up. South Canterbury,” pub- j lished in your columns of 24th July, in ' which the Hospital Board’s decision to postpone their re-building scheme is attacked. Yesterday’s meeting of the I unemployed shows how serious the ; unemployment position is in Timaru i at the present time, and surely there [ could not be a better time for obtaining cheap tenders for the Board for what is admittedly an urgent necessity at the Hospital. The Hospital Board i would be giving employment to a large amount of skilled and unskilled labour, . at the same time receiving full value for their money. This is surely better than doling out charitable aid, or the I paying one man to dig a hole for another to fill up. I trust that some energetic efforts will be taken to have this decision of the Board reviewed, for the benefit ox Timaru at the present time.—l am, etc., CITIZEN. Timaru, August 4.
