THE WEATHER Steady drizzling rain was experienced in Waimate on Monday, and will be greatly appreciated by the farming community. There had been very little rainfall for some weeks, and the country was badly in need of a soaking to start grass growth, now that spring is approaching. GOLF. The following is the draw for the fifth medal round (third L.G.U. Shield) to be played by the Ladies’ Golf Club: —Senior, Miss R. Hertslett v. Miss Jones; junior, Mrs McLean v. Mrs Fraser; Mrs Borrie v. Mrs Shackleton; Mrs Hertslett, Mrs Foster, Miss Akhurst. Third grade, Mrs Holmes v. Mrs Scott; Miss Cochrane v. Mrs Shaw; Miss Nash v. Miss Judge. COURT. A first offender inebriate was convicted and discharged by Mr P. Grant J.P., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. The police stated the man had been in the lock-up since 10.15 on Saturday night. BASKETBALL. On Saturday, a basketball tournament was held in Victoria Park. Six A grade matches were played, the competing teams being Waitaki Girls High School. Timaru Girls’ High i School, Craighead Diocesans School, and Waimate High School.
