CHRISTCHURCH NOTES. {Special to “Herald."} CHRISTCHURCH. August 1. Sweet Refrain was lame after working at Riccarton on Thursday, and

subsequent examination showed that she had split her pelvis. Her chance of racing again does not look bright. This is bad luck for her owner, also her trainer. A. E. Wo”mald, who had the Thurnham mare in excellent order for the Grand National meeting. Among the horses who did strong work at Riccarton this morning was Lord Ranald, who was sent over three circuits of the inside track. The big Masterpiece gelding is improving steadly in condition. F. Shaw has arrived from Wingatui with Kapuna and Shipshape, who will be racing at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. He brought a couple of Aus-tralian-bred yearlings, owned bv Mr R. M. Greenslade, for educational purposes. D. O’Connor’s mounts at the Christchurch Hunt meeting will be Wairio, Lancer, Fresh Breeze. Shatter, Charmeuse, Kaikahu and Gold Mint. E. Shaw will pilot Valves and Verden, also Star Stranger 11., who may be started twice. A. E. Ellis will ride Toxeuma, Painkiller. Moratorium, West Dorns and Desert Song. R. Coveny will handle On Top. Subdivision and Knockany. He will be on Nightmarch in his gallop. A. S. Ellis has arrived for the Christchurch Hunt meeting. He will ride Memories and Membo. Kapuna will be ridden in the Homeby Steeplechase by W. Cooper. Logd Ranald will be piloted in the Homeby Steeplechase by W. Scobie, who handled him in his successes last winter. D. Cotton has been engaged for Tray Bond and Lord Thomond. J. B. Pearson has Gasrange, Verden and Distrait engaged in the Maiden Stakes to-morrow, but Distrait is a doubtful starter. Coupled on the machine with the other pair will be Shipshape, in whom Jearson still has a contingency interest. G. Salt is making a steady recovery from the effects of the broken collarbone which he received when Amorist fell with him at Trentham. and he is hopeful of being able to ride at the Christchurch Hunt meeting. Snowfall’s form in the Homeby Steeplechase will be followed with great interest, as he is a Grand National possibility. He has not had a race over the Riccarton fences. Harold Logan is under treatment by a veterinary surgeon, and it is quite on the cards that he will not be a starter at Addington next week. About a year ago Harold Logan was operated on for splint trouble.
