A jury returned a verdict of not gu' tv in the Supreme Court to-day, in a ci j in which Alexander Ralston was charged with negligently driving a motor vehicle, thereby causing the death of Robert Callander. ABDUCTION CHARGE. By Telegraph—Press Association NELSON, August 1. Ronald Edward Morrison (19), charged with abduction of a girl under 16 years, pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for ■ trial. A TEACHER’S FALL. By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND. August 1. A school teacher with a B.A. degree, Charles Edward Bradman, alias Jackson, was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment for a series of false pretences in Cambridge, Auckland and Whangarei. His counsel said that Bradman, through a small offence, had lost his Government employment and then fell back on his musical talents to make a living, but was unemployed again through the advent of the talkies.
GAOL FOR BOOKMAKER. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, August 1. Stanley William Findlay, for carrying on the business of a bookmaker, was sentenced by the Chief Justice to nine months’ imprisonment. There were previous convictions, and the Chief Justice said he could not allow the law to be flouted defied, and broken with impunity. SENTENCES AT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 1. At the Supreme Court to-day, before the Chief Justice (Sir M. Myers), Jack Hawes was sentenced to 18 months with hard labour, and Joseph Newton to 12 months with hard labour, for having housebreaking implements in their possession, and for -leaking and entering. John Donnell, for indecent assault on a female, was ordered to undergo .12 months’ reformative imprisonment. Charles Patrick McAllister, for '.urging and uttering, was sentenced to two years with hard labour. There wire several convictions against him and he was warned that if he came before the Court again would be declared an habitual criminal.
