j GRAIN, SEEDS AND ROOTS. POTATO MARKET RELAPSES. By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, August 1. The potato market, which received a fillip early in the w'eek, has suffered a slight relapse. To-day tubers for prompt delivery are quoted at from £4/15 - to £4/17 6. f.0.b.,5.i., for August at £5 a ton, and for September at £5/2/6. Nearly all the activities of the market during the past few weeks has been in “paper” potatoes. There have been very few potatoes bought from the grov.'er for August. The grower is a very firm holder. There is a fair inquiry from Auckland and : other parts, but it is much below the | volume usual at this period of the j year. j There has been a fairly keen con--1 sumption demand for oats during the ! past few days. Southern quotations ! are 3 10, f.0.b.,5.i., for A. grade Gartons, and 3 9 for Bs. Local B. Gartons have sold at 4/-, f.0.b.,5.i., and A’s. at 4/1. Chaff for prompt delivery has been sold at £7 to £7 2/6, f.0.b.,5.i., equivalent to £5/7/6 to £5/10/-, on trucks. A few odd lines are offering, and best quality lines can command up to £4, on trucks. There is still a little business being done in next season’s wheat, on the basis of 5/5 to 5/6 on trucks for Tuscan, according to station. Fowl wheat is firm, with the inquiry good at 6/- to 6/1, f.0.b.,5.e. Small seeds show' no change, and business is duller than at any corresponding period for some years.

DUNEDIN WEEK-END REPORT. BRAN AND POLLARD REDUCED. By Telegraph—Pr»ss Association DUNEDIN, August 1. The milling wheat market remains in an interesting condition. There W'ill be a change in the Pool prices this month, *d per bushel being added. This, however, does not affect the position in tne Otago district, as there has been a clean-up of all lines of milling wheat. Millers are working on their present stocks. Prices to farmers are nominally 5/9, sacks extra on trucks at country sidings, for Tuscan, and 6/- for Hunters. Although there is no marked increase in the distributing trade for fowl W'heat, prices are firm, with a tendency to go still higher. The prices of bran and pollard have been reduced by 10/- per ton as from July 29th. The weakening in the oats market is not now so apparent, and it w'ould seem that buyers of forward oats for July delivery have disposed of their stocks. Sales were made dow'n to 3/8 f.0.b.. s.i., but holders in Otago and Southland have been asking up to 3/11 for actual stocks. The demand for seed oats has not yet commenced, but farmers w'ill be paying attention to this matter very shortly. There are ample stored stocks of exceptionally good lines of oats for this purpose. This applies to Gartons. but of other varieties, such as Duns, black oats. Algerians. etc., there is a distinct shortage. There is no alteration in the chaff market. Until the recent break in the weather took place, there were indications that the arrivals w'ould be more plentiful. The values are from £5/10/- to £5/15/- per ton, sacks extra, ex trucks. There have been odd inquiries for shipment during the last w'eek or two, but several South Island ports have low'ered their prices for deliveries to the North Island. This makes it very difficult to sell from here, and the trade is developing into a local one. The demand for medium and poor chaff is steady, as local dairymen are buying to supplement their feed. The value of this quality is from £4 tp £5 per ton, sacks extra, ex store. Distributors of potatoes still complain that sales are on the small side. Buyers have no confidence in the market, and trade is confined to choice lines. These are selling at £5 to £5/5/-, sacks included, ex truck. The spring demand for seeds has not yet commenced, but during the week there has been good inquiry for both dogstail and browntop. The ryegrass market remains very, firm, with a distinct shortage in stocks.
