SOUTH CANTERBURY v. WANGANUI. TO-DAY’S BIG GAME. The Wanganui Rugby team will open its South Island tour against South Canterbury this afternoon on Fraser Park. The visitors arrived from the north yesterday corning, and were met at the railway station by the officials of thd South Canterbury Union. During the afternoon, the players had a run on Fraser Park, and, judging by their display, should develop into a good combination. The team selected to meet the local representatives this afternoon is a fairly strong one, including as it does, eight of the players, who took the field against Britain in the opening match of the latter’s Dominion tour. Only four of the forw r ards, Walden, Leahy, Stewart and Heise, who played agamsc Britain, will make their appearance to-day, but the Wanganui side, after the severe defeat suffered at the hands of Taranaki, underwent drastic changes, and the new forwards, Preston, Kilkolly, Fromont, and Pairama, have materially strengthened the pack, which is now a fairly solid one. Duncan, who retains his place as halfback, is a versatile player, and should give his backs plenty of work. K. Gibbons, who captamed Wanganui against Britain, lost form for a period, but is reported to be back to his former standard. McLennan, selected as a five-eighth against Britain, in which position he made one or two fine runs, will to-day play on the wing, J. Morgan having been selected to partner Gibbons. Thompson, who gave a great display against Britain, will play full-back. The team selected to represent South Canterbury is a fairly good one, and, provided the backs can show any degree of combination, they should be able to keep the Ranfurly Shield challengers busy. The forwards lack weight, but every member of the pack is a grafter, and all are good loose men. The absence of Strang will be felt in the backs, but Gaffaney and Blyth have played together a good deal, and should combine to effect this afternoon. Neutze was in good form on Saturday last, and he should have no trouble in linking u*p with Gaffaney and the wings. Trotter has had to drop out of the team on account of an injury received on Saturday last. He will be' replaced by L. Mahan (Old Boys) who should fill the position equally well. _ The match, which is to commence at 2.30, will be controlled by Mr A. B. Rowlands. THE TEAMS. The teams are as under:— Wanganui. D. A team from St. Kevin’s (Redcastle, Oamaru) in charge of Brother Ryan, visited Waimate yesterday to play a match with the Waimate High School team. The visiting team was one made up of first and second grade players, and they succeeded in beating the home team by 11 points to 5. The day was bright and sunny, and there was a good attendance. Rev. W. B. Scott was referee. The Play. Soon after the start, the Waimate full-back was caught in possession, and St. Kevin’s attacked. For an infringement, St. Kevin’s were awarded a free kick within easy range, and a goal was kicked. Passing rushes by St. Kevin’s backs reached Waimate territory. Ryan (Waimate) intercepted a pass, and St. Kevin’s backs being out of position, scored a nice try, which O’Malley converted, making the score Waimate 5; St. Kevin’s 3. Waimate were nearly over on two occasions, but good line kicking by the visitors’ full back eased the pressure. The visitors, by offside play, lost opportunities to score. Shortly before half-time, a passing rush among St. Kevin’s backs ended in a score, Nolan touching down. The kick at goal was successful, and the first spell ended: St. Kevin’s 8; Waimate 5. Shortly after resumption, Ryan placed Waimate on attack, and they were awarded a free-kick, but the attempt at goal failed. A good rush by the visitors was spoilt by a knockon, the ball going out at the corner flag. A free kick to Waimate brought relief. The visitors missed another chance to score, one of their backs trying to take a pass with one hand, and dropping the ball. St. Kevin’s secured from a scrum, and the ball reached Mowat on the wing, who crossed the line to score. The kick at goal, by McLean, struck the upright. St. Kevin’s 11; Waimate 5. The visitors’ backs started another rush, which should have ended in a score, but Windle elected to kick. Play now became somewhat ragged, and several free kicks for infringements were inflicted, mostly against the visitors. Shortly before time, a good rush by St. Kevin’s was nearly successful, Waimate forcing in time. Time was called with the score: St. Kevin’s 11; Waimate 5. BRITISH TEAM AT ROTORUA. By Telegraph—Press Association. ROTORUA, July 22. The British footballers were given a typical Maori entertainment by the Rotorua Maori Choir at Tamatakapua, the historic meeting house of the Arawa tribe, last night, by Maori songs .dances and exposition in native customs. The visitors greatly enjoyed the unique function, and are delighted with the Rotorua golf course, baths and sights. Torrential rain is stopping j all outdoor engagements to-day.
