RIFLE SHOOTING.

"HERALD” SHIELD COMPETITION. FIRST ROUND SCORES. Shooting in the first round of the "Timaru Herald" Shield competition was concluded last Saturday, and results are now to hand. This year the competition is being run on a sectional basis, and the shooting wil l cover four rounds. The winner of each section will compete in the final. The Lewis Cup is competed for in conjunction with this shoot, and is awarded to the team with the best score off the rifle. At present Timaru Fire Brigade lead with a score of 394, Pleasant Point A. being second with 393. The third team is Timaru < A., scoring 390 points. On Tuesday night the Washdyke Miniature Rifle Club fired the third and final round for a trophy donated by Mr W. Grant. There were four members in the shoot-off—W. W 0...:, R. Taylor, P. Couper and R. Moore — and the first-named proved the winner with 76 oft the rifle. The following were some of the best scores off the rifle:—R. Moore 78, A. Ross 77, P. Applegarth .6, W. Wood 73, T. Stocker 72, J. King 77, P. Couper 77, S. Browne 76, K. Hunt 73, D. Stocker 71, R. Coleman 70. The next shoot will be for a trophy donated by the president, Mr Parlane, which will be flred in conjunction with the second round of the "Herald" Shield. WAIHAO FORKS GUN CLUB. The Waihao Gun Club held a shoot on June 26, when 13 gunmen were present, Timaru and oamaru being well represented. All events were very

keenly contested. The leading results were as follows: 7-bird Sweep—S. F. Hanson and G. T. Smith with the possible divided the stakes. 9-blrd Trophy Match (first trophy presented by Mrs T. Sullivan, and second by Club)—L. Gorman with the only possible won the first prize. S. F. Hanson and J. Christie, with 8 kills each divided second. Waihao Forks Challenge Cup match of 10 birds—C. W. Hislop. L. Gorman, S. F. Hanson and R. Baker shot all their birds and divided the prize money. On a shoot-off for the cup, Hislop won from Gorman on the 13th bird, Hanson and Baker dropping out on the eleventh. 7-bird Sweep—S. F. Hanson, R. Baker and L. Gorman shot the possible, and divided the stakes. First-miss-out Sweep—J. Robertson and H. Hanson divided on the 15th bird.
