WAIMATE.

MEETING OF RETAILERS. A meeting of the Retailers’ Association was held on Wednesday morning to decide whether to accede to the employers’ petition to close on Saturday in order that employees might have opportunity to attend the second Rugby Test, Britain v. New Zealand, in Cnristchurch. It was pointed out that most of the employees had seen the British footballers at the Dunedin test, and those who could not had been given leave to see them in Christchurch. It was decided not to close the shops. SCHOOL FOOTBALL. A football match between teams from the Public and Convent Schools was played on Tuesday afternoon, and resulted In a win for the Convent by 9 points (3 unconverted tries) to 3 points (an unconverted try). The forwards were evenly matched, and the success of the Convent team was due to the superiority of their backs. L. Ryan two tries and W.' Sullivan were the trygetters for the Convent team, and R. Golian scored'for Public. Mr J. Grainger was referee. SAVAGE CLUB. On Tuesday nigh*- the hapu of the Waimate Savage Club was raided by about 40 members of the Oamaru tribe, led by Great Chief E. Mee. The visiting chief was met by Great Chief W. E. Travers, who handed him the pipe of peace and the tiachla, and invited him to conduct the korero. The Waimate Savages turned out in full force, the attendance numbering in the vicinity of 120. A varied and excellent programme was presented and thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The following contributed items: Songs. Savages Geo. Wilkinson and J. McKay; ragtime patter on banjo, Savages E. McDiarmid and Albert Smart; piano solo, Savage F. C. Burry; sea chanties, Savages Hinkley, Wilkson and McKay: recitations, Savages M. K. McCullock; humorous stories, Savages Allan Young and R. V. Nichols. The visitors’ orchestra, under Conductor Savage G. M. Whale, rendered several splendid items. After the programme, Great Chief Mee thanked the Waimate Savages for the invitation and also for the kindness extended to them, and trusted that the visit would be the forerunner of manv more. An exchange of badges between the two Great Chiefs was then made. Great Chief Travers thanked the raiders for their excellent pregramme, and reciprocated the wish that there v/ould be many more visits between the two hapus. RUGBY.
