Mr S. V. M’Ewen, of Christchurch, has been appointed editor of the “New Zealand Referee.” A cable message from Sydney announces that in recognition of Squad-ron-Leader Kingsford Smith’s Atlantic flj&'ht, he has been promoted from Squadron-Leader to Wing-Command-er. Mr J. C. Thompson and Mr L. J. Dale, of the staff of the United Friendly Society Dispensary, have received notification from Wellington that they were successful In passing their B Pharmacy examination. At last night’s meeting of the Timaru Main School Committee, Mr J. W. Preen, a member of the Committee, was congratulated on his re-appoint-ment to the Canterbury Education Board. A message from Wellington late last night states that Sir Joseph Ward’s condition was a little better. His medical adviser stated that Sir Joseph’s condition was well maintained. The death has occurred at Dunedin of Mr Joseph Sparrow, founder of the Victoria Ironworks, at the age of 88 years. Mr Sparrow went to Dunedin in 1869, and remained in that city all his life. He and Mrs Sparrow celebrated the 61st anniversary of their wedding in November last year. A widow and a family of four sons and six daughters survive him.
