It was a fivepenny run (narrates the Auckland “Star”). The genial inspector entered the tram car. arid, beaming in a winning manner, called “Show All Tickets, If You Please!” in a pleasant tenor voice. His ministrations were devoid of complication until he came to a gentleman who was going the whole distance. “AH Tickets, Please!” he repeated mechanically. The gentleman felt in his left-hand top waistcoat pocket and produced seven tickets. The inspector scanned them. The current issue was not there. The inspector said so. The passenger produced six tickets from the righthand. top waistcoat pocket. The inspector inspected them. “It's not here!" he said with the slightest modicum of strain in his voice. The passenger dredged in the left-hand waistcoat pocket and brought up nine tickets. The inspector now exhibiting the least little lack of patience, sorted them and said, “And it isn’t here!” Turning to the conductor, he said, “Issue this passenger a fivepenny ticket!” Then the passenger, producing the correct ticket from his ticket pocket, said. “Oh, I beg your pardon. You asked to see all tickets, and, of course, I showed you every one I had. I’m so sorry.”

The memoirs of M. Clemenceau, published by the “London Daily Telegraph” includes an interesting reference to the late Mr W. F. Massey. In writing of the delegates to the Versailles Conference “The Tiger” says; “The delegate from NW Zealand, Massey, takes his place in the first rank for the loftiness of his sentiments and the eloquent kindliness of his broad speech. It was a stock joke to ask him how old he was when he gave up being a cannibal, to which he would answer, ‘Anyway, I had mine cooked, but you eat yours raw.’ ”

The installation of the automatic telephone system in Gisborne will not take place for some time, it is understood, but the delay in providing the town with this modern type of telephonic communication is explained on the grounds that the department has lately installed the most recently-de-veloped systems in certain North Island centres for testing and observation. If these plants answer all requirements satisfactorily a good advance in the automatic system will be recorded, and Gisborne and other towns not yet fitted with the automatic Telephone will enjoy the benefits of the latest mechanical exchange.

The candidness of a Christchurch barber rather took a customer by surprise the other day when the price of a haircut was being tendered. The customer, on receiving his change, remarked that he had only been charged 6d, and inquired if that was the regular amount. “That’s enough for you.” was the reply, “because you’re nearly bald." Others, who do not object to candour, may be inclined to seek out this particular hairdresser. The curtain specialist offers a Friday budget of specials to-day.
