NEW’ BEER DUTY.

REDUCTION DEFEATED. (United Press Association —By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received May 1, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, April 30. In the House of Commons, Sir W. Wayland moved to reduce the new beer duty from 3/- to 2/6 per barrel. He said while every other war tax had been reduced the beer tax had been doubled. The amendment was defeated by 243 to 112. Sir W. Wayland then moved to grant a rebate of 2/- per barrel for beer brewed purely from local malt hops. This was also defeated by 275 to 145.
