RE-LINING A COAT.
"An ordinary cloth coat can be relined easily in from four to six hours by anyone who can sew and will follow these simple directions:— First: Rip out the old lining, press it and use it as a pattern for the new lining. Second: Stitch and press the underarm seams of the new lining. Do not stitch the shoulder seams. Third: Place the coat to be re-lined wrong side up on a table, smooth it out and place the new lining in position on it. Begin to baste at the nearest armhole; baste the new lining around each armhole up to the unclosed shoulder seams. Then baste the under-arm seam of the lining to the under-arm seam of the coat with strong, short stitches, easing the lining on. not from the bottom of the coat and baste stretching it. Stop about four inches across the back from under-arm seam to under-arm seam, keeping the line about four inches from the bottom of the coat.
Fourth: The shoulder seams are closed by sewing the back lining neatly over the front lining, directly over the coat shoulder seam. Then, beginning at the centre back of the collar, the lining is turned, in and basted around the neck and down the fronts to the coat bottom. The lining at the bottom of the coat is turned up and hemmed. When the lining is neatly sewed to the coat all around, the sleeves are next attended to.
Fifth: To line the sleeves, turn them inside out, slip the new sleeve lining into place and baste it four inches from cuff and four inches from top, keeping the under-arm seams of coat sleeve and coat lining together in place. Turn edge of lining in around the armhole, sew it with strong, short stitches, and turn up lining at cuff, sew it to cloth of coat sleeve, and the coat is lined.
There will be no puckering of the coat or lining if the lining is smoothly basted across the back of the coat from armhole to armhole and again smoothly basted across the back four inches from the bottom of the coat. The lining at the bottom of the coat need not be caught to the coat, but instead may be finished with a hem.
