ANZAC DAY

MESSAGE FROM KING. By Telegraph—Pre*« Association. WELLINGTON, April 23. The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) has been commanded by the King to communicate to the people of New Zealand, on the occasion of Anzac Day, the following message from His Majesty:— “On this day devoted to the glorious memory of those who fell at Gallipoli, the Queen and I are proud to join in sympathy with my people in Australia and New Zealand — George R. 1.” TO-MORROW’S OBSERVANCE. As has been the case in past years, Anzac Day in Timaru will be commemorated by a special service to be held in Timaru Park to-morrow afternoon.

A parade will leave the Drillshed, High Street, at 2 p.m., and proceed to the Park, halting en route at the South African Memorial, where a wreath will be deposited. With the object of avoiding congestion, a departure has been made in the arrangements for the service, and this year the dais will be erected in the centre of the sports ground, instead of at the rear of the Memorial. Mr George Cray, president of the South Canterbury War Relief Society, and first life member of the Timaru Returned Soldiers’ Association, has been chosen as the principal speaker. The Rev. Harold Peat will preside.

In the evening it is proposed to screen an appropriate picture, when all returned soldiers will be invited to attend. A memorial service will be held at the South School at 10 o’clock ‘tomorrow morning, to which parents and friends are invited. The memorial service at the Waimataitai School will commence tomorrow at 9 a.m., when the Rev. F. C. Lawrence will give the address. Mr C. Carr, M.P., will also speak. Though the school is not in session, all pupils are expected to attend, and parents and friends are invited to be present. A service will be held also at the Boys’ High School to-morrow morning. It is expected that there will be a record attendance of old boys. To-morrow (Anzac Day) there will be celebrations of Holy Communion at St. Mary’s Church at 7 a.m. and 9.30 a.m., and at St. John’s at 7 a.m. The usual memorial service will be held in St. Mary’s, at 7.30 p.m. Offertories will be given to the Timaru branch ox the South Canterbury Returned Soldiers’ Association.
