There is at present to be seen in the garden of Miss Southgate. Kakanui, a very unusual and pretty sight—an aloe shrub in full bloom. The shrub came originally from Africa, and has several unique features. It creates its own moisture—a handy attribute these days —which enables it to thrive in the driest climate. It takes 21 years to mature from the time the seed germinates. and then it blooms, a process which takes six months to complete. The shrub then dies and casts its seeds, which, when they become tiny plants, may be transplanted in any country not subject to severe frosts.
