TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOARD OF MANAGERS. A meeting of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College was held last evening. Present: Messrs A. Stead (chairman*, J. G. Gow, G. T. Koller, A. Washer, E. W. Jones and J. £ W. Preen. t Principal’s Report. The report of the principal (Mr A. S McFadyen) stated that in the day classes the enrolments totalled 243, 228 of these being full time, and 15 part time students. The corresponding ( numbers for previous years were (1925) j i 94, (1926» 112, (1927* 116, (1928) 118.!! (1929) 200. There were 223 full time j students (187 last year), and 15 part j * time (13). Since the beginning of the year, eight students had left. There | were 21 part time classes, with 489 part ( . time students. The day students lis- I tened to Rear-Admiral Byrd’s message | on March 18. Brehaut Bros, supplied! a wireless receiving set, and the Col- i ' lege was very much indebted to them. In the evening classes, the enrolments were 334, 172 free place and 162 paying. The numbers in previous years were (1925) 181, (1926) 215, (1927) 206, (1928) 203, (1929) 277. There were 43 classes. Miss Dyer, the Inspector of Home Science subjects, visited the school on April 2, on her way to Dunedin. Mr Gow and Mr Washer visited the school on April 1 . Miss L. Mason, the new cookery teacher, commenced duty on March 24. The report, on the motion of Mr Koller, was adopted, it being decided to thank Messrs Brehaut Bros, for having installed their plant. Correspondence. The Education Department wrote, advising that a grant of £63/11/- had been made to the College, out of a re--1 quest for £73/1/-. The sum had been : approved for the items included in the 1 list accompanying the Board’s applica- ' tion, with the exception of a platform for drawing classes, provision of which ■ the Department did not consider to be ■ urgent. 1 The Department further wrote advis- ■ ing that the application of the College for a grant of £2B towards the cost of ■ equipment for dressmaking, laundry L and woodwork classes was under con- ' sideration. 1 A third letter was received from the • Department approving the selection of 1 a cookery teacher (Miss N. Manson) for the College. The letter stated that ' it was noticed that the position was ; additional to the present staffing, and ; it was assumed that the staffing regu- ■ lations permitted the appointment. The secretary of the Timaru Main , School Committee advised that an ap-1 ' plication from the College, for further basketball ground had been considered, i 1 and he had been instructed to advise 1 that the request could not be granted. ! „ Mr Washer Inquired if a deputation l might wait oil the Main School Com- j mittee. A round-table talk might do a I 1 lot of good. r The chairman said the Main School 1 . had the right to say “yes” or “no.” j t When Mr Washer asked a question, 1 before the chairman had finished y speaking, Mr Koller inquired what was the position. He did not want to listen e to two speakers at once. “Mr Washer ,1 is always chipping in,” Mr Koller _ added. ; Mr Washer: “You mind your own - business, Mr Koller. You’re not bad at chipping in yourself.” (. The chairman: “I wish members . would respect ■ the chair. This quibbling is to no effect.” The Board decided to leave the matter in abeyance. General. Accounts amounting to £94/3/9 were passed for payment. j The statement of revenue and expenditure, for the month ended March 31, showed that revenue, with the balance from last account (£764/17/5) amounted to £1330/12/3.
