NOTES.

A novel, which has been awarded the first prize of £IOOO in a competition judged by Miss Sheila Kaye-Smith. Mr Frank Swinnerton and Mr Hugh Walpole, must clearly be a work of unusual merit. The work that these authors and judges have chosen from among 600 other manuscripts, is Miss Muriel Harris’s “The Seventh Gate,” which Messrs Cape will publish. It is a fantastic story, described as being "in key with an era in which miracles are really made to happen, and to which nothing seems impossible.”

The late Mr T. P. O'Connor left £1248 gross with net personalty £366.

A bust of the late Miss Gertrude Bell, the traveller and author, has been unveiled in the Iraq Museum, which she herself founded. The statue was subscribed for by her admirers all the world over.

SONG. I have seen the cloud of fire where the eagle’s eyes Were lighted; I have seen its shadows on The wild glades where the grasses lurched and swayed In the wind from the flight of the fawn. I have seen the glade of molten moonlight where The fawn’s eyes joined the stars in a hidden pool— When the cloud of fire was ashes, and the wind On the eagle's eyes was cool. —Glenn Ward Dresbach.
