ECONOMY AXE.
REDUCTION OF DEFENCE BILL. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received April 7, 10.0 p.m. MELBOURNE, April 7. Further heavy economies are to be effected in the Defence Department, which, will probably result in the saving of £700,000. The only ships to remain in commission are the cruisers Australia and Canberra, the aircraftcarrier Albatross, one destroyer, the Success, while the destroyer Huon will be sunk by gunfire. It is estimated that 20 per cent, of the clerical staff will be dismissed.
