TIMARU ORPHEUS.
ANNUAL MEETING. The sixteenth annual meeting of the Timaru Orpheus Society was held in the choir rooms on Monday last, when there was the largest attendance for some years. The executive's report stated that during the yuar the usual number of practices were held in the Society’s rooms, and two concerts were given in the Theatre Royal. For the first concert the following artists were engaged: Miss C. Flamank, Miss Florence Munro and Mr L. E. Dailey, while Mr A. Wheeler took the solo part in “Eudora” and "Evening.” for the second concert the following:—Miss Merle Miller, Miss Naare Hooper (recitations) and Mr W. J. Richards. An event in the Society’s history was the broadcasting of the second concert. The conductor, Mr A. W. V. Vine, and tl.e hon. pianist, Mr F. J. Hyde, deserved special commendation for the manner in which they performed their duties. The thanks of the Society were due also to Mr A. Wheeler, one of the chonmembers for his fine work in the first concert. To Chas. Begg and Company were tendered thanks for use of the pianos at each concert. Mr R, W. Stewart, was thanked for the efficient manner in which he carried out the duties of house manager at each concert. The bank credit balance was £l6 18s Id The excess of assets over liabilities is £54 7s 4d. During the year they welcomed four new members to the choir viz; B. Brown, C. Rollo, A. Dewar, J. Little. It w'as with pleasure that they welcomed back from a trip , abroad, one of the oldest members and deputy conductor. Mr J. W. Holdgate. who had been on leave during the past season. During the year the Society decided to award service badges to the members of the choir. A gold bar was awarded for 10 years continuous service and a further bar for each additional five years service. The following members were allotted gold bars:—S. Brooks; W. Dickson; A. L. Hudson; J. W. Holdgate; C. H. Mason; J. MclCennah; R. S. Nicol; and J. Moves (two each), and A. Bryce; R. A. Holdgate: and E. Winnington (one each). A new departure was made when a social evening was held after the second concert. Mr Rolleston on behalf of the Society presented service badges to the members of the choir. An endeavour was again made during the season to have a concert in conjunction with the members of the Dunedin choir, but it was impossible to arrange the concert on a night to suit the visitors. The Committee noted the enthusiasm displayed by the choir, and also the splendid services rendered bv the hon. conductor Mr A. W. V. Vine whose efforts were responsible for ih? high standard of the choir, and for the high esteem in which the Society is held in musical circles. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President: Mr A. L. Hudson, vice-presidents: Messrs J. Moyes and R. Nicol; trustees: Messrs J. P. Newman and F. J. Rolleston; hon. conductor: Mr A. W. V. Vine; hon. dep. conductor: Mr J. W. Holdgate; hon. I accompanist: Mr F. J. Hyde: secretary and treasurer: Mr G. D. Virtue; hon. librarian: Mr S. Brooks: hon. auditor. Mr R. Holdgate; house manager: Mr 1 R. W. Stewart; committee: Messrs W. I Tweedy, E. W innington, J. Drennan, A. I C. Holst.
