CRANEMAN FATALLY INJURED.

Henry Reid, a married man, with no family, who was fireman on a railway crane on the wharf, met with an accident on Saturday. During craneshifting operations he was drawn on to the cogwheels and was so seriously injured that he passed away in hospital at 10 a.m. to-day.

Deceased was a native of Scotland, 39 years of age, and had been 18 years in New Zealand.

DROWNED IN RIVER By Telegraph—Pree* Association. CARTERTON, March 15. A drowning fatality at the Public Works camp on the banks of the Pahaoa river, at Hinakura, occurred on Thursday afternoon last, when a man, John Howell (27), lost his life. With a mate, at 4.30, he went for a swim. He swam across the river. His mate called him and he replied that he would swim back and follow on to the camp. As he did not return a search was made and the body was recovered an hour later. A doctor was sent for, only to pronounce life extinct.

An inquest was held at Martinborough, and a verdict of accidental death was returned.

STRUCK BY TRAIN. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 15. Ching Doo (25), was struck by the Daylight Limited when the train was entering the Otahuhu station at 8.12 this morning and sustained serious injuries. He was sent to hospital in a serious condition. He was walking across the railway line with a sack of vegetables on his back.

Although the engine whistled he evidently did not realise that the train was so near.

KILLED BY MOTOR CAR. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 15. Through stepping back when he heard a motor horn, Francis John Munson (52), was knocked down in Featherston Street, on March 4, and died in hospital. At the inquest to-day, a verdict was returned that deceased died after an operation for head injuries, caused by his being accidentally struck by a motor car, driven by Francis Charles Holmes.

HEAD-ON CRASH. By Telegraph—Prea*> Association. DUNEDIN, March 16. Two single women, Mavis Tyler (21). and Violet Moulin, were admitted to hospital yesterday, suffering from face and body abrasions. They were in different cars, which met in a head-on collision on the Outram road.
