There are still the elements of a stiff election fight present in the contest for the vacancy on the City Council. The Labour Party claim that the seat justly belongs to them, as the late Councillor Sharpe was elected on the Labour ticket. The Citizens’ Association has responded by nominating Mr C. E. Jones, a well-known auctioneer and land agent. It is possible that other candidates will enter the contest, which is set down for April 1. Pushing On Main Trunk Railway. According to the Minister of Railways (Hon. W. B. Taverner), in referring to the South Island Main Trunk, satisfactory progress is being made, and by next month the work will be pushed ahead faster. At present there ,are fifty men engaged on the Parnassus-Conway section, and at the end of the month many more men will be put on. Bowling Champions. The final of the Bowling Centre’s champion of champion rinks competition was played on Saturday, and was won by a United Club rink, skipped by Stan. Thomson, who defeated a Dunsandel rink skipped by J. Burgess.
