BRAN AND POLLARD
NO RESTRICTION IN PRICES. The Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., has received the following letter, dated 10th inst., from the Hon. Mr Donald, Minister of Industries and Commerce: “I acknowledge receipt of your letter of the Bth instant with reference to the action of the merchants in raising their prices for bran and pollard after the removal of the Customs duty, which was an outcome of the recommendations of the Wheat Committee. There are no restrictions on the millers or others altering the prices at which they sell their products, provided that the prices are not unreasonably high. The present wholesale prices for New Zealand bran and pollard are £7 and £8 10s per ton respectively in large sacks for shipping. Distributors, Ltd. prices for bran and pollard, in small sacks usually sold to storekeepers, are 10/- per ton in advance, viz:— Bran £7 10s, less 2* p.c. .. £7 6s. 3d. Pollard £9, less 21 p.c. .. £8 15s. 6d. The cost of landing offals from Sydney is as under:— Bran. £ s. d. Sydney price 7 10 0 Freight 1 16 0 Wharfage (Wellington).. 0 4 0 Primage 0 3 4 Insurance and Exchange 0 19 (Net) 9 15 1 Pollard. £ s. d. Sydney price 9 0 0 Freight 11l 0 Wharfage (Wellington).. 0 4 0 Primage 0 3 6 Exchange and Insurance 0 19 (Net) 11 0 3 It will be noted that the prices of the New Zealand products are lower by £1 8s lOd per ton for bran and £2 4s Gd for pollard, when compared with the landed cost from Australia. There is a very strong demand in Australia for bran and pollard for local consumption.
“In view of the foregoing it is not a case, on the facts disclosed in your letter, warranting action by my Department. I should state, however, that the market rates for wheat and wheat products are closely watched by officers of my Department.” (Since the above letter was written the price of pollard has been reduced by 10/- per ton.)
