SWIMMING

BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL. The annual swimming sports of the Preparatory Department of the Timaru Boys’ High School were held in the School baths yesterday afternoon. A number of heats in several events had previously been decided, the finals only being contested yesterday. Keen interest was evinced by the young pupils in the sports, which were efficiently controlled. The swimming reached a high standard, and some really fine contests were witnessed. The championship events produced a keen struggle between J. Mitchell and R. Bruce, who eventually finished on level terms, each securing ten points. M. Burnett, with four points, was third. WEST END CLUB. The West End Swimming Club held its weekly races on Wednesday night, before a good number of spectators. Each event was keenly contested, although there were fewer competitors than usual. Results were as follows: — SENIOR 100 YARDS HANDICAP — E. Guilford 1, F. Thompson 2, J. Richards 3. JUNIOR 50 YARDS HANDICAP— D. Elder 1, J. Richards 2, F. Thompson 3. JUVENILE 25 YARDS HANDICAP —Jack McMahon 1, Jim McMahon 2, C. Rollinson 3. After the races the trophies for the first series were presented, L. Hunt being the winner of both Mr W. Young’s medal for the 100 yards senior race, and Mr R. McGlashan’s medal for the 50 yards junior race. Opportunity was taken to present prizes to the various winners at the recent carnival. Open orders to the value of the respective prizes have been forwarded to absentee winners.
