RELEASED FROM GAOL.

ECHO OF DR COOKS CONVICTIONS. (United Pr**ss Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright,.) OTTAWA. March 7. A report from Montreal states that Dr. Cook was released on parole today. after serving five of his fourteen years’ sentence. He is allegedly penniless. having sworn a pauper's oath to escape a 12,000 dollar fine imposed with the sentence. Dr. Cook said: “I hardly believe I shall go to the Arctic again. I am getting old. and I doubt if I could endure the terrible cold.” I When Dr. Cook returned to Europe after a trip to the far north, he claimed that he had actually reached the Pole, and for some time his story was actually accepted without question. It was due to an enterprising journalist that his false tale was exposed. Once the authorities went into the whole question, and called for proof of his story, the whole bottom fell out of the audacious plot, and in the end Cook was under the necessity of admitting that his tale of the conquest of the North Pole was entirely without foundation. Later Dr. Cook appeared before the Courts on charges of fraud, and received a sentence of fourteen years’ imprisonment, and in addition he was fined heavily. J
