VICTORIAN FANS
AND THE DREAMY WALTZ. The Victorian or Edwardian lady of fashion flirted behind the shelter of her fan to the tune of a dreamy waltz. She flirted with life—we moderns flirt under the bright blaze of electric lights, accompanied by a loud jazz band—if we flirt at all, says an Englishwoman. The Victorian woman was, beneath her melting glances, probably just as sophisticated, heartless and blase as we moderns claim to be. And her morals were possibly even more deplorable than ours are alleged to be. But she knew how to live. We don’t. Our fathers and mothers enjoyed life, whereas, we are, or affect to be, bored with life, and continually in search of something—we don’t quiet know what —which ever evades us. And if we found that elusive “something” we would not have time to annreciate it.
