WAIMATE

SCHOOL COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Waimate School Committee thqre were present:—Mr F. George (chairman), Mrs Pitts, Rev. Canon Cocks, and Messrs W. Anderson, W. Hetrick, and H. Joliffe. The headmaster (Mr B. A. McKeown) reported that the roll number was:—Boys 264, girls 278, total 542. The average attendance for February was:—Boys 247.37, girls 259.23, total of 506.6. The figures for the corresponding month of last year were:—Roll number, boys 270, girls 296, total 566; average attendance, boys 251.6, girls 273.2, tdtal 524.8. There had been several changes on the permanent staff. Mr B. Whelan and Miss E. Christie had qualified for entrance to the Training College. Misses Gunn and Cleland, who had completed their year as probationary and substitute assistants also had left. Mr J. McClure had been appointed probationer; and Misses Richardson and Lindsay had been appointed probationary assistants. Mr R. Carlton and Mr A. Cadwallader took up positions on the staff at the beginning of February, as did also Miss Dunn and Miss McDonald. Miss Callaghan had been granted leave of absence for one month, and her position had been filled by Miss P. Taylor. Mr Arnold was relieving Miss Watson, who i s to take up duties on April 1 The report was adopted Correspondence. The Education Board wrote appointing Miss M. Watson to the staff. A letter was received from the Presbyterian Bible Class Summer Conference tendering thanks for the use of the school buildings during the holidays. Mr J. Bitchener, M.P.. advised that he was placing the urgency of the purchase of the land offered by the Borough Council for agricultural purposes before the Minister of Education, and wished the Committee success with the proposal. A statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the recent excursion to Timaru was presented, and after voting a guinea to the Silver Band and a guinea to the Ambulance, there was a credit balance of £l2, which was considered satisfactory. It was decided to advertise thanks to all who had assisted in making the day’s outing enjoyable. It was decided to place a voluntary contribution box in the Dental Clinic, as contributions had been offered and received. Accounts amounting to £2B were passed for payment.

The old established hairdressing a. tobacconist business next to the Farmers’ Co-op. has been taken over by Mr J. Ryan who will run it in conjunction with his shop in Hunt’s Buildings. At the former premises stock is being sold at sacrifice prices to make room for new goods. Hygienic saloon appointments at J. Ryan’s, Quc*m Street, Waimate.
