BAKERS’ CONFERENCE.
PRICE-CUTTING CONDEMNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Feb. 18. The New Zealand Master Bakers’ Conference opened here to-day. Delegates from Auckland, Canterbury, Dunedin, Wanganui, Southland and Taranaki were welcomed by the Mayor and the president of the Chamber of | Commerce. The Conference was opened by Mr S. G. Smith, M.P. The retiring president, Mr F. H. Hawker (Christchurch), in an address, spoke strongly against price-cutting, which he described *as a contagious disease that at times spread rapidly. He urged that competition should be in the quality of the product made and the service rendered. Complimentary reference was made to the work of the Wheat Research Institute. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr R. H. Montgomery (Auckland); vice-presidents, Mr A. Lawrenson (Dunedin), and Mr H. P. Burton (Auckland); executive, Messrs J. McGregor, C. D. Loeben, C. o. Cowan, C. Buchanan, L. Burton, vj. K. Mathieson; secretary, Mr James Wilson. The retiring secretary, Mr J. H. Barker, is to act in an advisory capacity for twelve months.
