MEETING OF FRUITGROWERS. On Friday night a meeting of fruitgrowers was held in Waimate to consider the reply of the Minister of Agriculture to a petition for Government assistance for growers who had suffered severe loss through the frosts experienced in the district in November last; also to go into the matter of spraying raspberries and disposal of the crop. Mr H. Allington presided. A letter forwarded by Mr J. Bitchener, M.P., from the Minister of Agriculture, was read. The letter stated that the Government was prepared to consider applications for assistance from those fruitgrowers or market gardeners who had lost the whole or part of their crops as a result of the late frosts, but it must be distinctly understood that advances would only be granted under the following circumstances: —(a) Where the settler’s livelihood had been so impaired that he could not carry on without assistance; Co) where the settler’s equity in his property and his general financial position were such that he had no reasonable chance of making his own financial arrangements for the additional finance required. Necessary action in the matter was being taken by the Horticulture Division of the Agricultural Department. Mr M. Leonard stated that he had met Messrs B. G. Goodwin and J. D.

Carolin, who had advised that growers requiring assistance should communicate with the Orchard Instructor, Department of Agriculture. Christchurch. and procure a form for making application for assistance. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Bitchener for his active interest in the matter.

Mr Allington said that in reference to the grub in raspberries, he would like to see raspberry growers placed on the same basis as orchardists in regard to compulsory registration, which would entail compulsory spraying and inspection. This would result in a large measure of protection to growers, and he would like a remit to go forward to the Dominion Fruitgrowers’ Conference to that effect.

On the motion of Mr H. Sanson, it was decided to forward a remit to the conference asking that registration and spraying of raspberry crops be made compulsory.

Mr Sanson drew attention to the 40 per cent, duty on raspberry buckets, and Mr Leonard said he thought the buckets were a clumsy idea. He would agree with Mr Bird that something in the nature of a cheap container, similar to that used for honey, should be introduced. This would be cheaper and cleaner, and would cost less for freight.

After discussion, it was decided to leave the matter for investigation by the Fruitgrowers' Association.

In regard to the price of raspberries, | a discussion arose as to the advisability of trying to start a co-operative jam factory in the district, but no definite scheme was put forward. 50 Acres L.I.P.
