PAREORA NEWS.

BURNS CLUB. The Pareora Burns Club has celebrated the birthday of the great poet for some years now. The concert excelled any previous concert held, and a large audience thoroughly enjoyed the programme. The committee, headed by Mr R. Munro (chief), left no stone unturned to make the evening a success. The concert party consisted of some of Timaru’s best talent. The appearance of the haggis, carried by the official “haggis-bearer,” Mr S. Wilkes, preceded by Piper A. Munro, was greeted with hearty cheers and after “Burns’s Address to a Haggis” had been recited by Mr J. Little, and the head cut from the thistle, the haggis was partaken of by all, and proclaimed to be the “best yet.” A lengthy toast list occupied a good deal of time, the following toasts being proposed:—“The King,” by the Chief; “Immortal Memory,” Mr A. Kennedy; “Our Chief,” Mr C. Brice; “Absent Friends,” Mr J. A. Munro; “The Ladies,” Mr R. Gorden; “The Visitors,” Mr F. Hanson. The concert items were as follows, each performer being encored:—Song by Mr Wotherspoon, “Star o’ Robby Burns”; Mr Minehan, recitation, “Night is Gathering Fast”; Mr Jenkins, song, “Sailing Up the Clyde”; , Mr Kennedy, song, “Somebody Waiting for Me”; Mr Watson, recitation; Mr Firkin, song; Mr Hutton, song; Mr Wood; duet, Messrs R. Munro and Mitchell. “Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. PRESENTATION. To show their appreciation of the work that Mrs J. A. Munro had done to help the Pareora Burns Club, the Committee waited on her at her home. Mr R. Munro, Chief of the Club, explained 'the object of their visit, and said the committee felt they could not allow another to go past without showing, in some little way, their appreciation of what Mrs Munro had done for their Club. For some years she had made the haggis for their Burns supper, and when one took into consideration the number of visitors that had to be prepared for one must realise what a great deal of. work Mrs Munro had to do. However, they knew that the work was always done without thought of reward, for the benefit of the Club, and it was the sincere wish of all that Mrs Munro would be long spared to carry on her good work. He then asked Mrs Munro to accept a set of stainless spoons and forks. Mrs Munro thanked the Club for their kind words and nice present. She felt is was an honour to be allowed to be associated with the Club, and the pleasure she derived from doing her little bit towards helping such a splendid club more than repaid for the work she had done. She hoped the Club would be in existence for many, many years. LADIES’ SPORTS. The ladies of Pareora have always been noted for the support they have given to the different sports clubs in Pareora. Not satisfied with being supporters of clubs, they decided to form a Ladies’ Athletic Club. An energetic committee, consisting of Mesdames Coote (patron), J. A. Munro (president), Misses McKenzie, Morgan, MacPhail, Scudder, Burling, Weenink, Mrs G s and M. Munro (secretary), soon ha u things on a satisfactory footing. To raise funds, a dance was held, and although a very wet night was experienced, a substantial sum was raised towards the prize fund. At the Club’s opening sports meeting a large crowd gathered, and all were agreeably surprised at the good performances of the competitors. The jumping events, which were keenly contested, caused a great deal of excitement. Messrs F. Hanson and J. A. Munro (handicappers and starters), Messrs Coote, Morgan, Pratt (judges), carried out their duties to the satisfaction of all. The committee thanked all who responded so liberally towards the prize fund; also those who gave help so willingly. The afternoon's sport was brought to a close with a tug-of-war between married and single ladies, the married team winning after a strenuous pull. On Tuesday evening last, a dance was held, and the distribution of prizes took place. Although it was a wet night, a large crowd was present. Misses Smallridge, Coote, Morgan and Munro supplied the music, and Mr G. Pratt carried out the duties of M.C. The prize list was:—
