ELEANOR BOLLING AT DUNEDIN. NEWS OP WHALING FLEETS. • By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, February 9. The Eleanor Bolling, the Byrd Expedition ship, arrived at Dunedin this afternoon at about four o’clock, after an unsuccessful attempt to get through the ice on the way to the Bay of Whales. A large crowd was on the wharf to welcome the vessel and crew. I The Eleanor Bolling left Dunedin on j January 10th last, and encountered I heavy south-easterly gales on the journey south, which was completed on January 30th. Iri addition to the i City of New York, the whalers SouthI ern Princess, Kosmos, C, A. Larsen, Sir 1 James Clark Ross, and Alonso Neilson were waiting for the pack ice to open. Mails and stores were delivered, and the Eleanor Bolling left the ice again on the morning of February Ist to obtain coal and stores for the City of New Y*brk and the whalers. Moderate weather was experienced on the return I voyage. j The ice pack is said to be heavier now than for years. The whalers are reported to have had a good season. j The southern journey was covered in 1385 steaming miles, and on the return 1486 miles were traversed, the ship having cruised along the ice pack for two days, and having penetrated further south than any other ship j this year. On the return journey many icebergs were seen scattered all round the horizon in the latitudes around 67 south. j It is reported that some of the whal- > ers engaged have been into the pack, and the bows of several have suffered damage. The Kosmos is said to have a full cargo. It is not likely that any whaler will go through to the Ross Sea. It was learned that the City of York is through the pack, and is now lying in the lee of the pack in a heavy get,... j She will be in Little America shortly if the weather conditions improve. The temperature recorded was 14 degrees below freezing point. The Eleanor Bolling is expected to sail again on Tuesday for the ice.
