NEWS AND NOTES.

At 2 p.m. to-day at their offices, Strathallan Stret, A. N. Oakey and Co., will submit to auction, under instructions from the mortgagee, three fine building sections at corner of Quarry Road and Athol Place. H. Allchurch advertise in the auction columns, a reminder of the auction this day, at 2.30 p.m., of a freehold property situated 31 Bidwill Street, in the estate of the late Mr L. W. A. Webster The fact that some wool-growers are reported to be shearing this week within a few days of heavy rain has caused some comment in Napier. Wet shorn wool naturally is heavier than »\hen dry, and it is stated authortt itfvely that buyers in the past suffered considerable losses through sheep being shorn when the wool was wet. One buyer is said to have lost £BOO on one purchase. In consequence of complaints from buyers growers whose wool shows a loss of weight will have to meet debit notes from the brokers. It is also stated that some of last season’s clips, when opened up in England and the Continent, have been found to be falsely packed by rougher wools being put in the centre of the bales. This is another matter concerning which buyers are said to be determined to protect themselves. The “ghost birds” are now back again, writes a Norfolk Island correspondent under date of 25th October. These are a species of mutton y birds. They got their name from their appalling screams, which sound exactly like a human being in the direst distress. The birds arrive in thousands on 14th October. How they fix the date and arrange for leap year is a mystery. During the day the sea offshore became black with the birds. There they remain until nightfall, when they land in a mass. The earth around the edges of the cliffs is burrowed like a rabbit warren with the nesting holes of the flock, and each bird darts immediately for the borrow in which it was hatched. Should he find a stranger in there before him, he seizes him by the tail and drags him out, amid terrific screams, and a battle royal is fought for possession. The night the “ghost birds” arrive pandemonium is let loose all round the edges of the cliffs. Visitors with good nerves go out to hear the fearful cries, which would make a blood-curdling record for the “talkies.” Souter’s re-building sale of store commences this morning.
