SNOW CARNIVAL.
SPORTS AT MT. COOK. One hundred and twenty visitors from all over New Zealand and many parts of the world, competed in the winter sports carnival' held at the Hermitage, on Tuesday. The quantities of snow all round made competitions possible in the immediate neighbourhood of the hostel. Indeed, the tape was held on slopes generally known to beginners as the “nursery.” Weather conditions were perfect. Snow, glistening and shining in the hot sun, threw into relief the many-coloured blazers and scarves worn by men and women, while the mountain ranges formed a glorious background to the scene. The keenest interest was taken in the more serious races, and the “stunt” races were hailed with shouts of joy. A fancy dress ball held on the eve of the competitions was a tremendous success. In the gaily decorated Hermitage, everyone entered into the fun and conspired to make difficult the task of Captain WhiteParsons, the judge.
