At last fifty were drowned as the result of a sudden flood at Skoplje, in Jugo-Slavia. A cyclone whirled through the town at midnight, uprooting trees and throwing them across the roads. Then followed a cloudburst, sweeping over the mountains and surrounding the town. A deluge poured down every valley towards the town. The panic-stricken people assembled in the streets, and dashed hither and thither in frantic attempts to escape. The Mahommedan quarter was wiped out in a few moments. Cafes and houses collapsed and the electricity gave out, the darkness increasing the horror. Eight hundred buildings were destroyed and 700 families are homeless. The torrent remorselessly rushed on, and destroyed the villages in the same valley. The total casualties will not be known for some days. SNOWFALL IN AUSTRALIA. ROADS BLOCKED AND WIRES DOWN. Some of the country roads are blocked by snowfalls. Manly reports a record low temperature. The city of Bathurst is snowbound. Telegraph lines are dov/n in some places, believed to be due to snow, which is also reported to have fallen in Stanthorpe district in Queensland. INCLEMENT WEATHER PERSISTS. RAIN WELCOME IN N.S.W. (United Press Association—By Electrle Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received August 25, 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 25. The cold snap continues, with the addition of heavy showers all night and all day long. The showers are welcomed in the country, as insuring good crops and plentiful feed for stock.
