TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

BOARD OF MANAGERS. A meeting of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College was held last evening. Present Messrs A. Stead (chairman), J. G. Gow, G. T. Koller, G. D. Selby, W. I. Talt, E. W. Jones and A. Washer. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The report of the principal (Mr A. McFadyen) stated that the roll number for the day classes was now 179, being made up of 167 full time, and 12 part time students. There were 83 girls and 96 boys. The attendance had been quite satisfactory. There were 8 basketball teams, 4 Rugby teams, and 2 Association football teams. There had been a steady demand for girls to fill commercial positions in the town. An Anzac service was held in the College on the afternoon of Wednesday, 24th April, when members of the Board were present, and the Rev. A. J. H. Dow gave an inspiring address. On Thursday the boys under Mr Johnston and Mr Davidson took part in the Anzac Day parade. The enrolments in the evening classes totalled 296. being composed of 160 free place and 136 paying students. There should be more junior free place students attending the evening classes, however. (£here were 209 classes registered in the College. It had been necessary to work out the average attendance of the evening classes to ascertain if the whole system of classes could be recognised. The average for all these classes in the College was 16.6, the number required by the Department being 16. Mr A. H. McLintock reported for duty on Friday. May 3rd, so that the full time day staff was now complete. It was not proposed to make any alterations in the time table until after the holidays. Advice had been received that the posters in connection with the competition conducted by the Dominion branch of the League of Nations would be available for display in Timaru from May 30 to June 12. These posters were to be displayed for a part of the above period in this College. The College would be closed from Friday, May 10, to Monday, May 27. In answer to a question, Mr McFadyen said that not many new enrolments were now coming in. A good number of pupils had left to take up positions in the town. This would not effect the staffing. In regard to the poster competition, it was decided that arrangements be made to have the exhibits on display at the College on a Saturday afternoon, so as to afford the public an opportunity of viewing them. The report was then adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The New Zealand Plumbers’ Board notified that, on account of an insufficient number of candidates offering in South Canterbury, no examination would be held in that district this year. The headmaster of the South School (Mr J. Methven) wrote thanking the Board for its letter of sympathy in his recent bereavement. A similar letter was received from Mr J. G. Johnston, Clifton Terrace. The secretary of the South Canterbury Hospital Board notified that May 12 would be observed as National Hospital Day, in commemoration of the birthday of Florence Nightingale. The Board asked the College's co-operation in the movement, by arranging for a party of senior girls, interested in nursing, to visit the hospital. The Education Board notified that, in reply to the Board’s letter of April 26, a grant of £l4l had been approved to enable the College to provide additional lavatory accommodation. The Education Department also advised that a grant of £4O/6/- had been approved for additional chairs, tables and stools, which were required owing to the increasing roll number. FINANCIAL. The financial statement showed the bank balance to be £197/8/3. which, with unpresented cheques (£l3l/6/9), made the total credit balance £66/1/6. The statement was adopted. GENERAL. It was decided that applications be called for the position of janitor at the College. It was decided that the tender of Shilllto’s, Ltd., for £lO6, be accepted for building new lavatory accommodation. Accounts amounting to £49/4/5 were passed for payment.
