TIMARU RAILWAY STATION.
MAYOR INTERVIEWS MINISTER. The Hon. W. B. Taverner (Minister of Railways) was met at the station yesterday by the Mayor (Mr W. Angland) . and the Deputy-Mayor (Mr T. W. Satterthwaite), when the urgent necessity of a new railway station for Timaru was placed before the Minister. . Mr Angland stated that the railway station was inadequate to meet the requirements of Timaru, and moreover, the appointments were unsuitable to cope with the traffic. The Mayor also pointed out the great Inconvenience and delay caused to'carriers and others at the Strathallan Street crossing, and better shunting facilities were urgently required. Mr Angland strongly urged the necessity of a new railway station, as the present building was the most out of date on the main south line. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr T. W. Batterthwalte), In supporting the Mayor’s remarks, said that a dock should be constructed for the outgoing Oamaru trains, as the practice of crossing the main line to board the Oamaru train would inevitably result in an accident. The Minister, in reply, said he would, together with the general manager and the chief engineer, visit Timaru before next session of Parliament, wi.Cli he would inspect and discuss railway matters with the Mayor. The Minister further stated that he would then decide on the improvements to be carried out to meet the requirements of the citizens. Such work would be a part of the comprehensive scheme for remodelling the station and yards. The Mayor then thanked the Minister for receiving the deputation, and for the promises made.
