Twelve thousand were present at the Stadium when the American bantamweight, Fidel fca Barba (8.9) knocked out the South African, Will Smith (8.10) in the twelfth round. La Barba administered unmerciful punishment to the face and bodv, using mostly 'the left hook, with the right rip to the body; but a large section wanted Smith to win. There was a laughable incident at the end of the contest, when a spectator enetred the ring to commiserate with Smith, and refused to leave. He was forcibly ejected in a Catherine wheel style over the ropes to the Press table. JACK JONES DEFEATS NEGUS. An infection that may cause disfigurement has set in in the deep wound Tom Heeney suffered inside his lip in the fight with Van Porat, and may necessitate plastic surgery if it spreads further. A physician states that Heeney was ordered to bed following treatment at the hospital for a gash inside his lip, extending from the base of the gum, which required fifteen stitches. It is stated that the injury may cause Heeney’s retirement from the ring.
