A SERIOUS CHARGE. By Tel'jjfraph— Association. HAMILTON, February 27. In the Magistrate’s Court, John Stewart Jeffrey (18), was committed for trial, on a charge of attempted rape at Frank’ton. Bail was allowed in £4OO, with restrictions on accused’s movements. Frederick Thomas Kelly May was committed for sentence tor forging a cheque for £lO, at Matamata, and £l(3 at Ngaruawahia. HOSPITAL BOARD’S CLAIM. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, February 27. A claim for £9 was made by the Hospital Board against 11. W. Gillespie at the Magistrate’s Court to-day. in connection with the maintenance of liis divorced wife. Mr Salmon, S.M., after hearing English and New Zealand cases quoted by counsel, held that under the Destitute Persons’ Act, which provides that no person shall starve, and that the State shall bo absolved from liability, said that- some party must be made liable; and he gave judgment with costs.
