CAROLINE BAY.

To the Editor of the "Timaru Herald." &ir.—After reading a letter signed “Deceived,” in the “Timaru HerRld” of Saturday last, 1 feel it my duty, being an enthusiastic Timaruvia;i, to write a few words in defence of our beautiful Caroline Bay. The tono of " Deceived’s” letter conveys the idea that the writer was in poor health. One can hardly imagine anybody in good health finding so many faults with a small town. His reference to the two old guns on the Bay as “twoblack blots on the landscape” prove •mil to be a person with no imagination and no sentiment, two very desirable qualities in every man or woman. The fact that “Deceived” could see nothing beyond the rubbish with which the guns were stuffed, proves him to be a person whose opinion should be treated lightly. He points out, without reserve, all the deficiencies of our beach, most of which we are all very well aware. However, we love the Bay, in spite of all these shortcomings, and are broad-minded enough to overlook them, and to glory in the blue sea and the sunshine. “Deceived” is evidently one of those depressing people, who simply cannot resist looking for the dark spots in any place where he should chance to be. He has probably done very little travelling, or lie would have discovered bv this time that every place holds something which will appeal to a man possessing ordinary intelligence and imagination. Visitors to Timaru rarely remark on the exit pipe at the north end of the beach, as a matter of fact, I am sure very few of them are aware that it is there. It seems to me that in looking into all these uninteresting things “Deceived” has overlooked the real beauties of our Bay, of which Timaruvians (in spite of the fact that there are many superior bays in New Zealand) have every reason to be very proud.—l am, etc. INDIGNANT. Timaru, February 25,
