RABBIT PEST IN ENGLAND.
Proposed Extermination. BILL DEFEATED BY LORDS. (United Press Association —By Eleetrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Australian Press Association —United Service.) (Received July 11, 7.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 10. The House of Lords defeated the Government’s Rabbits Bill by 63 to 55. Earl Wcmyss moved the rejection, describing it as ridiculous. The Bill was opposed to all the recommendations of the Select Committee, and was not designed io exterminate rabbits, but to p ncate the Farmers’ Union. Lord Darling said that the best way to reduce rabbits was to maintain a supply of foxes. They were more humane killers than the steel traps. Earl Russell said that the bill would produce endless friction among the landowners. If they sent poachers to extei-minate the pest, they would secure a store of information for future use. If they sent an inspector, they would be unable to shoot straight.
Lord Clinton said that all interested in forestry would support the Bill. The Mafquis of Salisbury said: “Let it not be said that the Lords, who know more about the land than any assembly in the world, would refuse to remove the rabbit depredations.” Nevertheless the Bill was beaten.
[ln May last the House of Commons considered a Rabbits Bill, to enable the authorities to exterminate rabbits when their depredations became serious. Members, however, found the Bill most difficult to debate with becoming seriousness.]
