SHUNTING FATALITY.
VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH. By Tel«er»ph—Pres* Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 10. That blame is attachable to no one, death being due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles and injuries to the back, the result of a shunting accident, was the verdict of the Coroner (Mr Lawry, S.M.), at the conclusion of the inquest into the death of Leonard John Hayman, to-day. Hayman sustained injuries while engaged in shunting operations shortly before two o’clock on the morning of October 4th, and died on October 6. Martin Codyre, shunter, detailed the shunting operations in -which he was engaged with Hayman. Two waggons were being detached, and, Hayman left him to attend to them. When Hayman did not return he ment to the trucks, and was in the act of cutting them off when he heard a moan. Hayman was found underneath, but clear of the lines. Hayman-.said he had slipped off the brake. Witness thought he had lifting the brake and fell off the end of the brake bar.
