CROQUET.
WEST END CLUB
A very pleasant function took place on tlie West End Croquet Club's, green on Thursday afternoon, when the opening of the season’s play was held in beautiful weather. Visitors from all the local clubs, from Temuka, and even as far afield as Christchurch, availed themselves of the Club’s invitation to be present; and during the afternoon a very large gathering of ladies, with a small sprinkling of men, assembled to enjoy the opening. About 2.30 p.m., Mr M. Vucetich, president of the West End Bowling Club, referred to the good points of the game, socially, and to the fascination it exercised over those enthusiasts, whom not even cold stormy weather could daunt. He congratulated the green-supervisor on the splendid condition in which the ’Teen appeared to be, and wished the members a pleasant and successful season. He then called on Mr Renton, who endorsed what had been so well said by Mr Vucetich, and advised the ladies, whether they lost or won, always “to play the game.’’
Mr Vucetich asked Mrs Trott, president of the Club, to sot the first ball a-rolling, after which he declared the green open.
Afternoon tea, was provided by the ladies of the Club, and a very enjoyable time was spent by all. Of three competitions held during the afternoon, two were won by Aorangi and one by Highfield.
