By Tsiejrsph—Prsss Association. DUNEDIN, September 16. An important test case, involving the issue whether petrol fining stations come under llie definition of ‘‘garage" was he.ird at the I’olire Court to-day. when bowser proprietors were charged with having sold petrol in view of the public on Sunday. The Police contended that bowsers were not exempted like garages. Mr Callan, for the defence, urged flit*t they were garages, and supplied a necessity. Evidence was given by Mr Ansell (President of thn South. Island Motor I.moil), who considered it essential that s leh pbice.s should be open on Sunday, as closing would put serious difficulties in the way of Sunday motoring. Most motorists now filled from such pumps. If was a method that avoided waste' and leakage. Moreover, oorvue .stations provided lor many small emergency troubles. The Magistrate, in reserving his decision i-timated that at present his view was that there was no offence. The -Magistrate was asked to doc-M« also whether a. bowser on the highway worked by a storekeeper was a garage.
