RUGBY UNION.
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union was held last night. Present — Messrs H. H. Fraser (president), J. Wilson, G. Fairbrother, W. Watson, D. O’Connor, D. Hertnon, C. Clarkson, S. D. Mason. The secretary of the North Otago Rugby Union wrote asking if the South Canterbury Union desired to have an outside referee or a local referee, to control their match at Oaniarn. The matter was fully discussed, Mr O’Connor moving and Mr Clarkson icconding, that an outside referee be obtained. The .motion was carried. The Old Boys’ Football Club wrote asking to have G. Adkins Tegraded from junior to third grade.—Referred to Permit Committee.. The Pleasant Point Club wrote asking that J. Sharpies, injured in -I he fourth grade match, Pleasant Point v. Zingari, played at Point on July 2, bo placed on the insurance fund. — Referred to Insurance Committee. Correspondence was received from the Zingari Football Club stating that one of their fifth grade players, in a recont match, had had his trousers stolen, and asking if the Union could do anything in the matter. The player concerned was a schoolboy.—The letter was received. The New Zealand Rugby Union wrote drawing the South Canterbury Rugby Union’s attention to its loan account. At the present time the total amount outstanding, plus interest, stood at £584 9s od. In view of the fact that the New Zealand Union bad bad requests for loans fiom various Unions, which it was unable to giant, on account of insufficient funds, the South Canterbury Union was requested to considerably reduce the arrears as scon as possible.—The matter was left in the president’s hands to see to, when in Wellington next neck. Permission was granted to the Timaru Boys’ High Schrol to play a match against St. Bede’s College, 'Christchurch, at Timaru, on Thursday, July 14.—After some discussion, the Union decided to control the game, and it was also decided to write congratulating Father Kerley on having secured the. match for Timaru. A letter was received from the secretary of the Timaru Defence Rifle Club detailing the proceedings of the initial meeting held in connection with the proposed carnival to be run by the club.—lt was decided to open the carnival on September b and conclude on September 12. Following on the receipt rf the letter, some discussion took p acc -in reference to the Union’s part in the carnival, and it was eventually decided to donate 25 per cent, of the proceeds nf the Timaru High School-St. l'ede’s match to the Queen Carnival fund. The North Otago Rugby Union wrote asking if the Union wculd be agreeable to playing a junior repiesentative match in Timaru on August 20, and a similar game at Oamaru on July 23. Failing the Union accepting the game, it was asked that the suggestion be forwarded cm to the Waimato Sub-Union. It was decided to reply to the effect that- the Union was quite agreeable to playing a match in Timaru, but could not see its way clear to send the juniors on tour. The secretary to {lie Asliburtcn Rugby Union wrote stating that, a very handsome shield had been donated to the Union by Mr E. Doyle, and the Union bad much pleasure in offering the shield for competition between South Canterbury, Ncytli Otago, and Ashburton. A set of rules governing the competition were forwarded for perusal. Mr Watson said that they should approach Ashburton and suggest that the shield be donated for cqmpetition among the junior representatives. Air Wilson said that the matter was one which needed considering, and he moved that the matter be held over for a week.
Mr Fairbrother said that perhaps a sub-committee should bo set up to Consider the conditions. Air Wilson’s motion was carried. The secretary to the AVailii Club wrote drawing the. Union’s attention to the fact that the Tomu’ka third grade team last week played a Waihi player, H. Cross, who had played two games for the latter club since Juno 1. The matter was held over, the secretary stating that the team slips bad not yet ecnne to hand. The Otago Rugby Union wrote stating that it regretted that it could not send its representative team to Timaru this year on account of the Union’s northern tour. If a visit from the Otagq “B” team would suit, every endeavour would be made to send a team. Air Wilson said that they should hold out for the “A” team. A secondgrade team was not of much use. Air" Hertnon said that Otago were not playing the game with South Canterbury. It was pointed out that, South Canterbury drew a good gate at Dunedin last, year, and on the last occasion Otago played in Timaru the match had cost, the South Canterbury Union a goeff deal of money. It was decided to appoint Air Cumming to a seat on the insurance Committee.
Mr Wilson, on behalf cjf the selectors, reported that they had visited Fairlie last week; and had viewed the games there, but they had no report to make. He suggested, however, that a trial game be played, preferably on a Wednesday. After brief discussion, it was decided to play a trial game on Wednesday, July 13. The chairman said that there were rally two Saturdays left in the ordinary competitions, and it might be ndvisable to play the Beri Cup and the final of the senior competition on the' one day.
