DEERSTALKING.
As this season promises io be a good one for stalkers, a lew notes re treatment of skins and skulls would not be out of place. How often lias a stalker returned homo to find the skins no use, hair slipping and maggot infested, etc,, when a little extra earo and attention, will obviate trouble? After the .skin is off; cut as much flesh from the roots of the ears as possible, also the lips; spread, out fiat m the shade, and brush on crude carbolic acid —und.iiuted —and leave for 24 hours; fold the outside edges to the middle, then roll up, with hair side out, and tie up with wooden label suitably inscribed.'-Skins treated thus will keep in good condition for months. Some stalkers use alum in addition to crude carbolic on extra thick skins, but the main .points is to get it on as soon as skinned. Skulls must be boiled— not too much and jawbones retained for. moating. ‘ These remarks are by -an experienced taxidermist, W. J. Salkeld, of Palmers Road, Brighton, Christchurch, who solicits the reader’s patrouago in the matter of mounting heads. His resent work is unexcelled in the Dominion —a bold statement —but, 'if in doubt, -a head sent to him will prove his claim. Rail skins and heads to W. J. Salkeld, Christchurch, and send a letter of advice to Palmers Road, _ Brighton, Christchurch, and they w:il re ;ceivo uroimjt attention, m.
